Conflicts in the Other Part of the City

Clashes of interests were at the front burner in August this year over the proposal of building a community center and a Mosque at Tsui Lai Garden, Sheung Shui, by the United Muslims Association of Hong Kong. It has raised continued attention from the mass media in Hong Kong when the word ¡¥racial discrimination¡¦ was severe between the Association and the locals.

Mohamed Alli Din, head of the Association with more than 10,000 members, complained about the local residents and some politicians who try to ban such proposal with many reasons.

The proposed community centre will be one comprising of facilities not limited to Muslims but also the local residents. It is also proposed to house a school in it.

The local residents, however, are strict with the argument over bad Feng Shui that the mosque might impose on their living. The local residents also do not see the reason why the Association insist to build such a mosque next to their housing estate, while there are abundant amount of land in other parts of the New Territories.

The conflict continues.
